MacKay’s Garage

MacKay’s Garage Ltd was established in 1965 by David and Helen MacKay.  The services offered at this time were automobile repairs and chainsaw sales and service as well as providing gas and diesel.  In 1978 the business was taken over by Robert MacKay and it expanded to include transport trucking, aggregates and snow removal services.  The old building was torn down in 1979 and a new one was ready to move into in 1980.  The provision of fuel was discontinued in 1985.

The building was extended in 1993 and 2003.  In 2004, the family did an interview for the newspaper to celebrate their 40th anniversary in business.  In the article Helen MacKay was asked if she could remember the price of gas back when they opened.  She could not remember but stated “you could get change back from a $5 bill when you purchased a five gallon can of gas and a quart of oil.”

Rob MacKay, Bonnie Gahan (nee MacKay) and Brad Mackay took over the business in 2006 when the business expanded to include bridge building.  In November 2018 the automotive repair service was discontinued to allow the business to focus on the trucking and construction industries.
