VILLAGE OF MCADAM

146 SAUNDERS ROAD

MCADAM, NB   E6J 1L2

I and the Village Council want to thank all McAdamites for their support in social distancing and helping their friends and neighbours through these stressful times. For us and many of you, there is no greater place to live than in McAdam.

The news is starting to turn for the better with word of the curve flattening in Canada, monetary assistance for those being adversely affected financially, technological advancements in testing, positive results in the race to develop new drugs, work on potential some odd 70 vaccines, that New Brunswick has one of the lowest infection rates in the Country and politicians and industry leaders beginning discussions on how to bring the economy back. There is finally some light at the end of the tunnel.

However, despite all this good and hope filled news, we would like to caution that many of these remedies are still quite a way off in the future with a cure potentially 12 to 18 months away. Therefore, we must prepare ourselves emotionally to still face several weeks if not months of maintaining our social distancing efforts.

Social distancing has worked for us here in the Village. To date, we have not had any instances of COVID-19. Thank-you.

Our Manor has been safe for our loved ones. This is testament to the dedicated staff of both the Manor and the Clinic and the procedures they have put in place. Thank you.

To the McAdamites supporting us by working in the grocery store, pharmacy, garages, hardware stores, Post office and those carrying out municipal operations along with everyone keeping the trucks and trains moving, thank you too for being there.

Our Council is dedicated to the well-being of our community. We will maintain essential services such as policing, water and sewer, fire fighting and garbage collection. We will also continue to post the most recent information we have regarding COVID-19 on our Face Book and Village web pages. You may also reach out to us at anytime if you have questions or concerns. Rest assured, we will evolve our efforts to best serve you and the community while protecting the health of residents and Village staff.

We are all in this together and together we will get through this.

I would like to take a moment of your time to let you know that the McAdam Village Council is working very hard on your behalf to adopt policies that will help limit the spread of COVID-19 within the community while maintaining essential services.  We are also developing and ensuring plans are in place to deal with future aspects of the disease.  From the start of this disease in Canada, our Council has been in the forefront in developing plans on how to react to COVID-19.  In consultation with community business leaders and citizens, we were the first community in New Brunswick to close community activities and events where the public might gather in groups.  We initiated weekly meetings to discuss the spread and prepare our community for its arrival by developing response plans based on a broad spectrum of issues including: length of outbreak and spread; community staffing; safety and security; food, water, shelter; health and medical; energy, power, fuel; communications; economics; transportation; hazardous materials; human consequences of COVID-19; and defining the triggers that will allow our community to return to some semblance of normal.

Our response to COVID-19 is also being done in conjunction with Provincial authorities.  We are having one to two phone and Zoom conference calls per week each with: The New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization; Dr. Lamptey, Regional Medical Officer of Health; Dr. Barker, Southern Regional Officer of Health; and, The Department of Environment and Local Government regarding water and waste water essential operations.  Discussions during these meetings provide our community with the most up to date information dealing with the spread of COVID-19 as well the most current Federal and Provincial policies and guidelines.

Our nation’s best and brightest are working 24/7 on therapies to minimize the effects of COVID-19 and develop a vaccine to protect us.  They will succeed.  We just have to be patient and band together to support one another until they do.   We are all in this together and together we will get through this.

Like many of you who may have watched the National on CBC last evening, we were horrified to see the effects COVID-19 is having on our society.  The long lines of cars waiting to drop patients suffering from symptoms of COVID-19 at emergency wards at overwhelmed New York hospitals and the word that people who have had loved ones pass away in their homes and cannot find anyone to take them to the morgue or funeral homes.  The reports of uncontrolled COVID-19 outbreaks amongst some of our most vulnerable populations at Nursing Homes across Canada.  The rapidly growing number of people losing their jobs and facing financial and psychological hardship.

These images stand as a warning to us all.

As a nation, by many measures, we are doing better than most who have been affected by COVID-19.  In New Brunswick, identified cases are low at this point and in McAdam we have not seen any confirmed cases to date.  We have been fortunate our leadership at all levels took early steps to slow the spread of this disease across Canada through mitigation efforts such as social distancing.  Unfortunately, we are merely entering the early days of this fight.  The numbers of new cases are growing in Canada.  While many Canadians, New Brunswickers and McAdamites take the COVID-19 threat seriously, we know from polling and personal experience that some 20% still do not and continue to flaunt social distancing.  We can be proud as a community that we have taken our responsibilities in social distancing seriously and that this has likely had a direct affect on the lack of spread of the virus here but we need to work on that small minority.   It is very difficult to change our habits in visiting family, friends and neighbours or traveling to Fredericton and St. Stephen to shop.  However, we need to change, or we will be potentially responsible for killing those same family, friends and neighbours because we couldn’t stay home. Although McAdam has not yet had a confirmed case of COVID-19, the threat is real to our community’s collective health and we must not let our guard down.  Please continue to follow social distancing, handwashing and personal safety guidelines.

Our community can take pride in it’s support of one another.  Many McAdamites are looking after their neighbours by running errands, checking up on one another and providing us with much needed entertainment.  As we know, many people are being and, have been, laid off because of the virus.  As a result, the food bank has been seeing a rise in the number of inquiries and usage.  These layoffs are putting many of our hard-working neighbours in a position where they may need a bit of a hand up.  We can do this either directly or by supporting the foodbank.

Our nation’s best and brightest are working 24/7 on therapies to minimize the effects of COVID-19 and develop a vaccine to protect us.  They will succeed.  We just have to be patient and band together to support one another until they do.   We are all in this together and together we will get through this.
