Gift Card Scam Alert – Please Read & Share!
It has come to Council’s attention that residents in McAdam have recently been targeted by gift card scams. These scams are becoming increasingly common across Canada — even in small, close-knit communities like ours.
Scammers may steal gift cards from stores, copy the barcodes and PINs, and return them to shelves. When a shopper unknowingly loads money onto that card, the scammer drains the funds before the card is even gifted or used.
But there’s good news: Corey from Corey’s Independent Grocer has taken proactive steps to protect our community by removing all affected gift cards from his store. This is a perfect example of neighbours looking out for neighbours.
Other scams to be aware of include:
• Calls from fake CRA agents demanding payment in gift cards
• Scammers pretending to be your bank or even a grandchild in trouble
• “You’ve won the lottery!” scams requiring gift card fees
• Romance scams asking for gift cards in emergencies
REMEMBER:
• No real organization, charity, or government agency will ever ask for payment via gift cards.
• If something feels off, don’t act right away — talk to someone you trust.
• Report anything suspicious to authorities or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
Let’s keep each other informed. If you or someone you know has been targeted, please contact the Village Office. We want to help spread awareness and keep McAdam safe from scams.
