Welcome

Earthquake Update received by Mayor Carroll on May 17, 2012

Hi Frank,

Many thanks for sending me the name of another person who believe they saw earthquake lights. I am following up on this, but so far have not been able to make contact.

In regard to an update on the McAdam earthquakes, Karl has prepared the two attached maps, with the plotted locations of events provided by Earthquakes Canada. The first map gives a regional view of the earthquakes with the May 7, 2012 earthquake, northeast of Spednic Lake plotted and the second map shows a more detailed map of the earthquakes under and closer to McAdam. Please note that these locations are based on preliminary analysis and changes in positions may occur when a data analysis using all of the recorded information is used. However, there is no doubt that most of the activity is concentrated under the northern part of the village.

We still do not have a clear explanation for the seismic activity; just a few ideas that we would like to investigate. What these investigations will entail depends on the resources and funds available at UNB and the cooperation of Earthquakes Canada. Because of the scientific interest in earthquake swarms, the latter agency may also wish to undertake further studies. One request I have for a possible UNB project is to find if there is an abandoned water well in the village, in which a water level recorder could installed. This information might enable us to relate earthquake activity to changes in groundwater level in the village; just one idea we are considering.

Have a good Victoria Day weekend.

Kind regards,

Ken Burke,

As noted above, we are looking for an abandoned water well in the Village in which a water level recorder could be installed. Anyone who would have a sight available for monitoring purposes are invited to contact the Village Office at 784-2293 during regular office hours.

Thank you,

Mayor Carroll
